This beam bounces off the retina and returns to sensors attached to the laser. The sensors then measure any distortions in the reflected light, as any abnormalities in the beam will indicate the precise position and shape of aberrations in the cornea. With this information, the laser will be able to calculate exactly how to apply bursts of laser energy to the cornea so that, after reshaping, it is perfectly smooth and round. Aside from this change, the custom LASIK procedure is identical to that for traditional LASIK.
