Myopia

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a type of refractive error that occurs when the eye's cornea is too steep. This common corneal irregularity causes light to focus in front of the retina, rather than directly on it, resulting in blurred distance vision. At our Twin Cities-area practice, we offer a number of treatments for myopia, including glasses, contact lenses, LASIK, custom LASIK, IntraLase® (all-laser) LASIK, LASEK, phakic IOLs, and refractive lens exchange.

Hyperopia

Patients with hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, can see objects clearly at a distance but experience difficulty viewing objects close up. Like myopia, hyperopia is caused by a corneal irregularity. In patients with hyperopia, the cornea is flatter than that of a normal eye. This forces light to focus behind the retina, rather than directly on it, and results in blurred close vision. Treatment options may include LASIK, Custom LASIK, IntraLase® LASIK, refractive lens exchange, and phakic IOLs, as well as glasses or contact lenses.

Astigmatism

In patients with astigmatism, the curve of the cornea isn’t round like a basketball, but oblong, like a football. Light rays unevenly focus in the retina, which causes blurred vision at all distances. At Acclaro Eye Clinic, convenient to Minneapolis and Shoreview residents, astigmatism can be treated in a variety of ways. Dr. Conrad can help patients with astigmatism decide whether LASIK, IntraLase® LASIK, custom LASIK, LASEK, or another treatment is right for them.

Presbyopia

In younger eyes, the lens can automatically focus light from nearby objects on the retina by changing its shape. As the eye ages, the lens gradually loses this ability, resulting in blurred close vision. Fortunately, there is hope beyond glasses and contact lenses for those with presbyopia. With premium intraocular lens implants such as Crystalens®, ReZoom™, and Tecnis Multifocal™, offered at our Minneapolis-area clinic, patients with presbyopia can once again enjoy clearer, more youthful vision.

Cataracts

The eye works like a camera. When the lens is cloudy, the camera doesn’t take good pictures. A cataract is a cloudiness of the lens of the eye that causes reduced vision. Patients with cataracts in the early stage of development may benefit from a new eyeglasses prescription. Eventually, even with an up-to-date glasses prescription, a patient's vision may become too poor to function normally. At this point, cataract surgery may provide an optimal solution. Dr. Conrad can easily diagnose the presence of cataracts during a complete eye exam at our Twin Cities-area eye clinic.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve, the part of the eye responsible for transmitting visual information from the retina to the brain. If left untreated, glaucoma can eventually lead to blindness. At Acclaro Eye Clinic, we believe that regular glaucoma screenings are essential to preserving your visual health. If a glaucoma diagnosis is made, there is a range of quality treatments with which we can successfully combat the disease.

Macular Degeneration

In patients with macular degeneration, the central portion of the retina — the macula — breaks down. If allowed to progress, this disease may result in blindness. Because the symptoms of macular degeneration are so gradual, it often goes unnoticed during the initial stages. This is why we recommend that patients undergo regular eye exams. Although there is no cure for macular degeneration, several treatment options are available to slow its progression.

Diabetic Retinopathy

A common complication of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy affects the blood vessels that transport oxygen and nutrients to the retina. As the blood vessels degenerate and become weaker, they begin to break and leak fluid. In an attempt to restore blood flow to the retina, the body creates new blood vessels, but these vessels are also prone to breakage and the development of scar tissue. Left unchecked, diabetic retinopathy can cause vision loss and blindness.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome is caused by decreased tear production. Common complaints of patients with dry eyes include discomfort, blurred vision, redness, and watering. Once recognized in an eye exam, dry eye syndrome can be treated successfully in a multitude of ways.
