How is IntraLase® different?

LASIK laser eye surgery requires that flaps be cut from the patient's corneas and folded back so that they may then be reshaped by a laser. The traditional LASIK procedure accomplishes this task by means of a microkeratome, which is a sophisticated device that employs suction to hold the eye in place and a very sharp blade to make the cut. As well as this device has performed historically, even greater levels of accuracy and safety are possible with the IntraLase® system. It makes the IntraLASIK procedure possible, which involves the creation of the flap through the application of pinpoint laser energy rather than a physical blade. Thousands of microscopic gas bubbles are created at the base and sides of the flap, and the resulting shape is much carefully tailored to the needs of the patient. Apart from this step, there is no difference between IntraLASIK and the traditional version of the surgery.

Added Benefits of IntraLase®

In addition to all the benefits of traditional LASIK, the IntraLase® version of the procedure offers enhanced safety and effectiveness. Dr. Daniel Conrad can use the system to design an ideally shaped corneal flap, one that is the perfect width and depth and has beveled edges that help keep it in place after it is folded back over the pupil. The result is that flaps almost never cut improperly and healing is a smoother process, with far fewer complications such as fold formation. Furthermore, because the well-shaped corneal flap provides an optimal canvas for laser reshaping, the correction process is more reliable and more patients enjoy perfect 20/20 vision. This precision also allows LASIK to be performed on patients with thin corneas that might otherwise be ill-suited for the procedure. One other factor in favor of IntraLASIK is the fact that some patients find the idea of a precision laser operating on their eyes less anxiety-inducing than having a metal blade do the same. All told, IntraLase® allows more people to experience better results with laser eye surgery, making it one of the most important tools available at Acclaro Eye Care.
