Presbyopia is virtually unavoidable, slowly robbing most of us over the age of forty of the ability to clearly see things close at hand without glasses or contact lenses. Although the root causes of presbyopia cannot be reversed, its symptoms can be dealt with through treatments such as monovision LASIK and refractive lens exchange. This latter procedure is much like cataract surgery in that it replaces the eye's faulty natural lens with a lens implant such as Crystalens®, ReZoom™, or Tecnis Multifocal™. Our North Oaks practice serving the Twin Cities area, including all of Minneapolis and St. Paul, uses this procedure to allow our patients to enjoy sharp, youthful vision once more.
The Refractive Lens Exchange Procedure
Our Lens Implant Options
Presbyopia results from a natural stiffening of the lens that cannot be reversed. Monovision treatment, in which one eye is adjusted for near vision and the other for far by means of laser eye surgery, and bifocal glasses and contacts can work around the issue, but the only way to repair the problem itself is to replace the lens with an artificial IOL.
The procedure for refractive lens exchange is virtually identical to that for cataract surgery. Dr. Daniel Conrad and his staff will numb your eye, make a small incision, break up and remove the old lens, and replace it with one of the advanced lens implants that we employ. The surgery take about an hour or less and involves very little pain or recovery. Within a few days, the patient is enjoying the clear vision of youth once more, and the symptoms of presbyopia should never recur.
A major part of producing good results is using good medical devices. Early IOLs were monofocal, meaning that they were crafted such that they could only provide clear eyesight at one small range of distances. Advanced technology, though, has produced superior lens implants such as Crystalens®, ReZoom™, and Tecnis Multifocal™ that allow the eye to be much more versatile. We at Acclaro Eye Care provide multiple such options to ensure that we can provide each patient with the most appropriate solution.
