PRK and LASIK are very similar procedures except with respect to the creation of the corneal flap. Specifically, no corneal flap is created in the PRK procedure at all. Instead, the laser removes a thin layer of tissue from the top of the cornea altogether before reshaping the remaining portion. Topical anesthetic ensures that patients do not feel any pain as a result of this step, and the tissue removed, called the corneal epithelium, will heal on its own within a few days. All other aspects of the PRK procedure are identical to that for LASIK.
PRK was actually used by ophthalmologists to treat refractive errors before the development of LASIK. It was replaced because it is a little rougher on the corneas, involving more discomfort after treatment and requiring a couple extra days for recovery. However, the thin corneas that some people possess rule out LASIK as an option, and PRK can allow them to enjoy the benefits laser vision correction nonetheless. LASEK and IntraLASIK may also be viable options for such people. One positive aspect of PRK is that it can be performed using wavefront technology, meaning that the superior results available through custom LASIK can still be had by those undergoing PRK.
