Cataract surgery is the removal of a cloudy natural lens and replacing it with a clear Intraocular Lens Implant (IOL). A cataract is when the normally clear, transparent lens inside the eye turns cloudy. It is not a film or a growth that covers the eye.
“In order to get access to the lens, a small incision must be made in the wall of the eye. The lens is the size and the shape of a chocolate M&M® suspended inside the eye by fibers called zonules. Through the small incision, an opening is made in the front capsule of the lens (candy coating), and the contents of the lens (chocolate) are removed using a special ultrasound. This leaves behind most of the capsule to hold the new implant lens (IOL) in position. Different varieties of IOLs are available to correct the vision after the natural lens has been removed. The procedure takes about ten minutes to complete.”
