LASEK surgery, also called Epi-LASEK, is the reshaping of the cornea just beneath the surface layer (epithelium) to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism.
“LASEK involves elevating the top layer of the cornea with a machine (epikeratome) or a solution. This sheet of epithelium is lifted to expose the corneal stroma. The stroma is reshaped with the laser and the epithelial sheet is repositioned. We do this when the cornea is too thin to safely perform LASIK, or if the surface is too rough to create a flap. Due to a longer healing process than LASIK, only one eye can be treated at a time, but the results are equal to LASIK.”
Acclaro helps its patients understand LASEK surgery and how LASEK can be an effective treatment for several eye conditions. Acclaro’s ophthalmologists are some of Minnesota’s leading LASEK experts.
