LASIK is the reshaping of the middle layers of the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and/or astigmatism.
“There are two parts to LASIK: creating a ‘flap,’ and applying the laser. A machine called a microkeratome creates a flap of the top layers of the cornea that is about the thickness of a soft contact lens. This flap is lifted and the reshaping laser etches the prescription treatment into the exposed surface. The flap is then repositioned. The whole procedure is well-tolerated – even by the squeamish – and takes about five minutes per eye.”
